Sure I was dreading it for a while (like everyone else), but the closer I became the more I was willing to accept it. At one point I was almost looking forward to it. My motto for my 30's is to "stop thinking about what I want to do and to start doing it." In other words, i'm a thinker and a planner. There's always something on my mind--whether it be something I want to build, something I want to experience, or something I want to do. If you see me looking like i'm doing nothing and i'm staring off into space, chances are i'm contemplating something. Some idea. Some notion. Some...question. So, to kickstart my 30's I did something I never thought possible--well, possible, yes, I just didn't deem it doable right now. But I did it anyway and it was surprisingly easy--for my 30th birthday I bought a house.

It's a standard 3-bed, 2-bath and it has a blue garage! Awesome, I know. I finally have the ultimate project--something to keep me busy when i'm not. I told Niki on a Wednesday night that I wanted to buy a house. She said OK (although i'm not sure if she was really taking me seriously or not, considering we've been looking and talking about it for over a year). Anyway, I pulled up several homes in our price range on har.com and told her to pick from one. The one bought is the only house we've BOTH agreed on spanning our entire search. She said "yeah, I like it " and proceeded to take a shower. Little did she know that as soon as I heard the water turn on I began filling out an application for a mortgage pre-approval.

I'll omit the details and cut to the chase. Basically, we looked at it online on Wednesday, got pre-approved for a mortgage on Thursday and celebrated with sushi at Blue Fish House, looked at it in person on Friday, had an offer in that night, ironed out the details on Saturday and had a contract later that night. I almost vomited several times in the process. It was all happening so fast and making me very anxious, but worth it. It's a huge step for me, as I don't always accept change well. But I did it, and it's done. We'll close on June 3rd and i'll officially be a homeowner.

If you think that you can't do it, trust me, you can.

Rotation for April 2008

Still trying to keep up with some sort of weekly/monthly rotation post:

Oasis - (Complete Catalog)
The Black Keys - Magic Potion
James Taylor - Greatest Hits
Frank Sinatra - (some greatest hits collection)
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle

***
Magic Potion is one of the few recently released albums i've been listening to lately. I noticed quite a few around the 30th of October this year. Last year, I saw quite a few around the 10th or so of November. I remember when some people waited until at least the day after Thanksgiving, most waiting until the 1st of December (which is completely acceptable). Next year it will be before Halloween, and so on. I'm thinking that it will happen earlier and earlier every year until we are eventually putting up our holiday decorations the day after we take them down in January.

So if you need a guide for when to set out your holiday decorations I have made the following schedule for the next 15 years since people can't seem to wait (this applies to both residential and businesses, although businesses are allowed to start a few days early).

Schedule:
2008 - Oct. 15th
2009 - Oct. 5th
2010 - Sept. 25th
2011 - Sept. 15th
2012 - Sept. 5th
2013 - Aug. 25th
2014 - Aug. 15th
2015 - Aug. 5th
2016 - Jul. 25th
2017 - Jul. 15th
2018 - Jul. 5th
2019 - Jun. 25th
2020 - Jun. 15th
2021 - Jun. 5th

January 4th, 2036: Take down x-mas stuff from 2035 holiday season
January 5th, 2036: Put up x-mas stuff for the 2036 holiday season
Jan. - Dec. 2037 - holiday season, 24/7/265!

More space art

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_05SGIFUzy3E/Ry-W2Jndk2I/AAAAAAAAABk/2eKJyD4I-Jk/s400/nebula_lg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129484357636821858" />
Here's my latest...it's some sort of nebula system. I watched Biggio play the final game of his career and as an Astro last Sunday. I could tell that he was pretty emotional, which made me sad as well. I've watched him play catcher, 2nd base, center field, and 2nd base again for 20 years. I have a hard time remembering the Astros before Biggio. It will be weird watching the Astros next season without him, but as long as there are nine players on the field, one in the box, one on deck, and one in the hole then i'll be fine.

Rant

Gaddamn Guitar Center…I’m really starting to hate that place (the Westheimer store, at least). I was there last night to buy some strings for my classical guitar, with every intention of making it a quick trip (like I always do). I thought I’d step into the acoustic room for a minute or two just to see what they had. I’m thinking of trading in my classical for a flamenco guitar. Flamenco guitars have more…um, I hate to use this word when describing sound, but “punch.” The body is a little bit thinner and there isn’t as much bass response as a classical. Yeah, they’re both nylon string but the subtle differences make all the difference. On with my rant…

First, there is this douche bag that is playing every guitar in the room, really loud, and really bad. I didn’t know it at first but it turns out he works there. He keeps shouting to this other employee with a goatee asking him if he is playing some song right...I think it was that one song by Everlast. Then he starts playing the goddamn banjo like a guitar. Arghhh! I’m trying to try out an instrument over here! Must have been his first day on the job.

Then, the other employee, the Scott Ian wannabe, picks up another flamenco guitar off the wall, faces me, and starts playing really loud. I’m used to other people playing in the acoustic room, but the part that pissed me off is that he was less than two feet away from me (almost right next to me, and still very loud). Seriously, I could not hear what I was playing. He must have heard me playing Asturias (by Isaac Albeniz, look it up, it’s a good song) and decided that he could play it better and that he had to prove it. I’m thinking to myself, “um, yeah, WHY would I even consider buying an instrument when I can’t even hear what I’m playing?” I just know he wanted me to look his way and give him a compliment of some sort on his playing ability. You know, something like, “hey dude, you’re pretty good!” I refused to give him the satisfaction. Way to go dude. You proved your guitar excellence, fucker.

Now, I’m normally pretty reserved and usually keep comments to myself in certain situations, but this next part surprised even me. The first guy, the new guy, finally asks me if I need any help as I’m putting the guitar back on the wall. I look at Wannabe for a second (still noodling) and then I look at New Guy and say, “as long as you two are in here, no, I don’t.” I looked at him for a sec and walked out. I know that you can’t go into a guitar store and expect to NOT here someone playing a guitar, it IS Guitar Center after all, right? Duh. But, there is a reason that the acoustic room has doors on it, and, there is plenty of space in that room to play anywhere else except for right fucking next to me. Seriously, like 18 inches or so. I’ve been in there many times when other people are playing—no problem. Sure I could have asked him to be quiet, but I shouldn’t have to.

Am I being out of line? Or being a snob? If so, somebody please let me know. I mean, it’s not like trying out a Marshall stack—you HAVE to crank those things before you buy ‘em, it’s a given, an unwritten rule, and it’s totally understood. Seriously, how else are you going to get the full experience of valve-powered-awesomeness? But acoustics, come on. At the very least, prove your guitar excellence all you want, just not in my face.

A few things I would like to do in my lifetime (with a few i've already done for dramatic effect).

As usual, in no particular order:
Set foot on six of the seven continents (4 down, 2 to go)
Play the piano
Learn how to shuck an oyster
Scuba dive with sharks - DONE
Drive a '67 Shelby Mustang GT500
Restore a '67 Shelby Mustang GT500
Learn how to unsnap a bra like The Fonz - DONE
Learn how to play 'Canarios', by Gaspar Sanz
Snorkel with a whale shark
Cook the perfect steak
Learn French
Learn Spanish
Own a sailboat
Learn how to sail
Clone my cats
Learn to bobsled
Retire early
Write a novel
Direct a movie (based on my novel)
Drop something from the tallest building in the world
Hang out with Jim Carrey
Dance like Michael Jackson (admit it, the dude can dance)
Meet James Bond
Catch a home run
Eat the world's best Philly cheese steak (if I haven't already)
Catch a fly with chopsticks

Leftovers

Some foods are good the next day, or even the day after...and some aren't. Note that I rarely eat fast food because, well, the shit just ain't good for 'ya...but I was in a hurry and I needed something 'fast.' This is where the 'sneaky bastards' part comes in. I went through the drive thru and ordered the number five...it's the angus burger with fries and a drink. The price is $5.39, I think...could be a couple dimes more. Anyway, after I made my order the person on the other end of the intercom asks me "what size would you like, the large or super-size?" By asking "what size would you like," rather that "would you like to get the large or king size for x-cents more," it immediately becomes a trick question. He/she asks as if those are my only two options and if I respond "large," assuming that is the original size I ordered, then I will get charged and extra $0.40 and an extra $0.65 for the king-size. So, just in case i've managed to confuse the hell out of you here's the bottom line: if you go to Burger King and you don't want the large or king size, when asked, make sure you say "neither, just the regular size is fine." But, before you go, make sure you look at THIS, it might change your mind.

Rotation for the week of 04-16-07

Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA
When I was a kid, '84 I think, I remember begging my mom for a red hat so I could put it in my back pocket like the cover of this album. I guess I thought that was cool. Never did get the hat...oh well. Anyway, you can't go wrong with The Boss--I think everyone should own this album.

The Supertones - The Supertones Are Go!
For the last 12-15 years i've always had at least one surf album on rotation, the majority of that being Laika & the Cosmonauts or Dick Dale. But, thanks to some friendly conversations over at SurfGuitar101.com i've found some more tunes to enjoy. The Supertones are pretty awesome and I can't stop listening to this CD.

The Toadies - Rubberneck
This is one of those CD's I think i'll listen to forever. Funny thing, i've seen the Toadies five times, but only once intentionally. The other four times they were added to the bill after I had already bout tickets to whatever show it was. The Butthole Surfers/Rev. Horton Heat/Toadies show was one of the best, even though I left halfway through BHS. These guys fuckin' rock live.

Witch - Witch
Stoner rock, dude. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Nineteen ninety five

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_05SGIFUzy3E/Rfr4a3DPHII/AAAAAAAAABE/0mAVlYG6PUE/s400/Rancid-AndOutComeTheWolves-front.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042615873132502146" />
I love this album. [or of those with missing limbs]

When a person who suffers from this specific phobia sees an amputee, they will often feel restless and try to escape the situation. In serious cases a fight-or-flight response or panic attack may occur. In spite of how strong the symptoms can be, the person is generally aware that there is no real ground for their fear. Many Apotemnophobia sufferers are most affected by the view of the flailing unnatural stump, which causes the massive dread by the sense there should be something there.

In most cases the phobia can be treated with psychological techniques. Well, just in case you’ve been waiting, here it is. Lets start with Wednesday…

Wednesday: For us 9-5’ers, Wednesday is also known as ‘Hump Day,’ no, not because we hump on Wednesday (even though we could and sometimes do), but because it’s the middle of the week. It’s all down hill from here. In fact, by the end of lunchtime we’ve passed the halfway mark. Another good thing about Wednesday is that tomorrow is Thursday, the day before Friday.

Thursday: Thursday, the day before Friday. We’re done with Wednesday and we start making our plans for the weekend, which starts tomorrow. We sometimes stay up a little bit later on Thursday night and we start to forget the perils of the week up to this point. We rest easy knowing that Tomorrow is Friday. Tomorrow, at 5:00, the weekend starts.

Friday: The weekend is here! Yeah, technically Saturday and Sunday are considered the “weekend,” but what else are you going to do after 5:00 Friday afternoon? You pick up a six-pack on your way home from work, go home, prop your feet up and say, “Ah, I’m glad it’s Friday.” Some of us drink the whole six-pack, maybe even twelve, maybe more. There’s nothing better than an ice-cold brew after a long week. We do this because we can, because it’s Friday and we don’t have to work in the morning. Tonight we’ll hang out, party, catch a live band, or whatever else. We rest easy because, well, probably because we just downed eighteen beers.

Saturday: First we sleep late and nurse our hangover, drink a full pot of coffee, and ponder repeating what we did last night tonight. We’ll decide on that later. Today we can do whatever we want. It’s probably a good day to go buy that Lawn-Boy Lawnmower we’ve been eyeing, and while we’re at the hardware store we might as well pick up some other useless tools that look cool. After we mow the yard, weather permitting, we reward ourselves with a beer, or two, or three, or eighteen. And, if we’re not too terribly intoxicated we will again hang out, party, catch a live band, or whatever else. Tomorrow is Sunday, and we can sleep late again.

Sunday: Again, we sleep late. Unless we go to church Sunday usually starts of rather slow. Sunday is always a slow day, as we need to recuperate from two nights worth of drinking…can’t show up to work drunk! Tomorrow is Monday, but it’s not that bad.

Monday: Monday keeps us in check. It keeps us from getting carried away with our weekends, but most importantly, we get to tell our co-workers about our new Lawn-Boy lawnmower. You know, the one with the cast aluminum deck, easy lift bag, and soft comfort grips. Oh, and it’s self-propelled too. Anyway, Monday lets us start over, especially if we last week was particularly bad. The only bad thing about Monday is that tomorrow is Tuesday.

Tuesday: The worst day of the week. Why, because we’ve already told our co-workers about our new lawnmower and weekend binge. Because we are not halfway through the week and tomorrow is not Thursday or Friday. Or Saturday. Tuesday sucks. There is nothing special about Tuesday.

No, not all of us buy a new lawnmower on the weekend, but you get what I mean ,right?

Stuck In A Moment (Sort of)

"Yeah, he's gotta keep rocking, he just can't stop
Gotta keep on rocking, that boy has got to stay on top
And be a juke box hero (got stars in his eyes)
He's a juke box hero (got stars in his eyes)
And just one guitar (juke box hero) put stars in his eyes
Now he's just a juke box hero
Juke box hero, juke box hero, he's got stars in his eyes
Stars in his eyes"

Foreigner rules.

Space Art

I painted these in Photoshop. Last night I had one of these 'events' take place. Here's how it went...

I go to Half-Price Books after work to look for some required texts for the two classes I am enrolled in, Early British Literature and Art Appreciation. Everyone knows that textbooks are ridiculously expensive, especially if you buy them on campus. I usually take my chances and wait until class has started to either a) see if I even need them for the class (you'd be surprised at how often you don't), or b), look for used texts on-line or at a used bookstore. Fortunately I find one of my texts immediately, Canterbury Tales, and noticing that is is the last copy I quickly grab it and place it under my arm. It was $4, compared to $13 brand new. Sweet. Since I found what I needed for the moment I proceeded to the travel section to look for anything by my new favorite author, Bill Bryson*.

There are two copies of Notes From A Small Island on the shelf. I grab one and Check the price--$5.99. I grab the other one to see it's price and notice it is $4.99--and in better condition than the first. I have no idea why this one is cheaper, and without even opening the book I place it under my arm with the other book and continue on, assuming this book is just like any other.

Now I'll skip all the boring parts and get to the cool part. Later on that night, as I'm about to go to bed, I decide to break open the book and read a chapter or two. I open the cover, and then the next page, and the next---What!? Huh? No way! On the 3rd page (I think) it says "Best Wishes, Bill Bryson." Immediately, I take a closer look to see if it is printed, or actually written in ink. It is. I can see the indentions left by the ballpoint pen and the shimmer of the ink. Awesome--I unknowingly bought a signed copy! Upon further inspection I take note that this book has never been opened. The spine is in perfect condition, as are the pages. I almost felt guilty opening the book, knowing that eventually the spine will become creased and lose it's luster. But, books are meant to be read, and so I did. Oh, I almost forgot, it's a first edition.

"Bill who?," you ask. Sure, a signed first edition such as this is not even in the same league as, say, Stephen King or whoever (can't think of anyone else right now) and might not mean squat to most of people, but it's cool to me. It is however, much, much cooler than having anything signed by Dan Brown.

I forgot to look for Artforms, the text for my other class.

*Bill Bryson writes travel books (among a couple that are not travel related). He has a dry, witty sense of humor and can somehow make anything interesting. I think I enjoy his work because I too like to travel and find myself making many of the same types of observations about the places I visit.

Awesome.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_05SGIFUzy3E/Ra0F8m_OcrI/AAAAAAAAAAY/sXRgw2H0q0g/s400/2007_01_15t222927_366x450_us_environment_animals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5020675698403996338" />

Sticks

If you were playing 'catch' with your dog, and you threw the stick into a pile of sticks, what do you think he/she would do?
